Curtis Alan Jones, born in Chicago, Illinois, is a multifaceted American artist widely recognized by his stage name Green Velvet. Also known as Cajmere, Geo Vogt, Half Pint, Curan Stone, and Gino Vittori, Green Velvet has made a significant impact on the global music scene. Growing up in a musically rich environment, Jones developed a passion for blues, jazz, funk, and rock. His introduction to house music in the mid-1980s ignited his journey into music production, armed with a modest setup of a "sixty-buck keyboard, a cheap four-track and a cheap drum machine." Jones, a graduate in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, ventured into the vibrant culture of house music during his studies.
In 1991, after a stint at the University of California, Berkeley, he returned to Chicago, marking the beginning of his prolific career. Under the alias Cajmere, Jones started releasing music in 1991 and founded Cajual Records in 1992. His collaborative single with Dajae, "Brighter Days," soared to number 2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1992. Notably, he founded another label, Relief Records, in 1993. The transformation into Green Velvet occurred in 1995 with the release of the single "Flash," reaching number 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. His diverse discography includes the debut studio album "Constant Chaos" (1999), a self-titled compilation album (2000), "Whatever" (2001), "Walk in Love" (2005), and "Unshakable" (2013). In 2014, Green Velvet collaborated with Claude VonStroke to form the side project Get Real, unveiling hits like "Mind Yo Bizness" / "Snuffaluffagus" in 2016 and "Jolean" in 2019.
A testament to his versatility, in 2015, he released a collaborative album with Carl Craig titled "Unity." Described by DJ Mag as "a stalwart figure in both house and techno," Green Velvet's career has been marked by constant evolution. Beyond his musical endeavors, his journey from chemical engineering studies to becoming a key figure in the Chicago House scene adds a fascinating layer to his narrative. The ongoing evolution in the music, career, and life of Curtis Alan Jones, the force behind Green Velvet, continues to captivate and resonate with audiences worldwide.
